Volkswagen
Volkswagen is a German automaker that is known throughout the world and is one of the best selling car brands out there. When people hear the Volkswagen name, they automatically think of German engineering that is considered some of the best in the world. And Volkswagen lives up to these expectations. Cars such as the Beetle and the Passat, both of which are great of fuel mileage, and also offer safety features that other automakers have yet to include on their vehicles. There is no wonder why these cars are some of the best selling in the United States.
Interestingly, Volkswagen was first founded as a Nazi trade union in 1937. The auto maker was mainly manufacturing motorcycles since most people of the time could not afford a car since most cars were considered too luxurious for common people. However, Hitler wanted to change that and he was the one who engineered the concept of a new car that the everyday man could afford. The way that these people could afford these new cars were through a payment plan, which is quite similar to the present day car loans that we all take out. However, this idea was short lived as the war approached, and the Volkswagen factory was turned into a factory for war production.
Once the war ended, the Volkswagen company was taken over by the British. The British meant to keep the factory as one that would still be dominant in the production of war equipment. However, they soon found that this was unnecessary and then placed the company up for sale, once again changing the hands of those who owned Volkswagen. However, the company persevered and became a dominant force in the drive of the Germany economy.
The first VW car that was released in the United States in 1949, however the public did not respond as many thought they would, in fact, only two cars were sold that year. This is when VW took the time to establish a VW United States in order to make sure that they were catering to the needs of the consumer market here, which did vary from the German market. This was when the Beetle emerged. And since then, VW has been a main force in the economy.
Since the Beetle, VW has come a long way. They now offer hatchbacks, sedans that address the needs of the family as well as those cars that are known for fuel efficiency. The company is also looking into the ever popular electric car concept, as well as hybrid concept in order to appeal to a larger demographic. In fact, the company believes that in the future all of their vehicles will qualify as a type of hybrid, which is going to greatly increase their popularity with the rising prices at the pump. However, until that day, VW still offers some of the most fuel efficient, as well as sleek looking cars that are on the market. Plus, the safety ratings on these vehicles are very competitive with any other car on the market.
